Synopsis

In the state of Sonora, north-western Mexico, on the shores of the Sea of Cortés, live the indigenous Comca’ac people. Throughout their history, the Comca’ac, or Seri, have survived numerous attempts at their extermination. Now the Mexican state wants to control their lands to turn them into a tourist centre. On October 22, 2006, Subcomandante Insurgente Marcos is received by members of the indigenous group. Remembering their dead and prisoners, the Comca’ac join forces to save their people and their collective heart: Isla del Tiburón (Shark Island).

Isla del Tiburón, Our Heart is part of the Indigenous Words of Northwest Mexico series. Its documentaries visit indigenous peoples, peasant communities and fishers of north-western Mexico, revealing the daily lives of their protagonists and the situations they face in maintaining their land and identity.
