PRESENTATION
The concept of TUWUN represents the territorial origin of the Mapuche, which, along with KVPALME, the family origin, defines the Mapuche identity rooted in the LOF, the territorial space that serves as the foundation for the ancestral territorial structure of a larger space, the WALLMAPU, the entire Mapuche territory.
This concept from Mapudungun, the Mapuche language, gives rise to TUWUN Indigenous Film Showcase of Wallmapu, created with the purpose of making knowledge, through cinema, this identity and the realities narrated from ancestral knowledge and the way life is understood from each people’s vision and relationship with their environment, their territory, their own history, culture, and spirituality, and therefore, from their own perspective.
In this sense, the TUWUN showcase represents a valuable opportunity to understand how life is perceived from the indigenous peoples’ own culture and an important space to share their perspectives and realities expressed through their representative voices, through cinema. The showcase promotes the decentralization of cinema and culture, generating a process of circulation at the territorial level and bringing the traveling showcase and its complementary activities to a wide and diverse audience, both urban and rural, with screenings of participating works in various spaces such as Mapuche communities, educational centers, and cultural centers, both in large cities and in localities that generally have difficulty accessing cinema due to being far from major urban centers. Additionally, it creates spaces for Nvtram (conversation) and mediation around its contents.
MAIN ACTIVITIES
TUWUN is an indigenous film showcase that mainly involves holding a Central Showcase, which takes place every year over 4 days at the LIQUEN Cultural Center in Villarrica, accompanied by activities held in various locations throughout the city. Additionally, there is a Traveling Showcase, which visits various places in Wallmapu, the ancestral Mapuche territory (southern Chile and Argentina). This takes place from the month following the central showcase until June of the following year, when the Mapuche cycle concludes and begins anew with the celebration of Wiñoy Tripantu (Mapuche New Year).
COMPLEMENTARY ACTIVITIES
As part of TUWUN, we conduct various complementary activities both during the central showcase and the traveling showcase. Among them are a TRAWUN (gathering), special showcases of works by indigenous and Mapuche guests, NVTRAMCINE (film forums), TUWUN showcases included in other film and cultural events, screenings for schools and communities, special cycles during the summer season, and a film appreciation workshop focused on identity, designed for education and mediation with different audiences such as school-aged children and youth, adults, organization leaders, Mapuche communities, etc.
