IndiFest returns more committed than ever, with films full of wisdom to captivate and challenge us. We value film and we share it together with indigenous peoples. Film marked by collective, participatory and decolonial production, by the manifestation of indigenous peoples’ identities and narratives, as well as a channel to express their demands in defending their rights.
This year, we focus on the climate emergency. Faced with this critical situation (a global phenomenon), the result of industrial activity and the exploitation of nature, indigenous peoples are now recognised and listened to throughout the world.
Through their films, we will see and hear their own unique narratives of a global phenomenon that has often been explained (and imposed) by the Global North: how they denounce those responsible, how they resiliently confront its consequences, and above all how their lifestyles have not only served to preserve natural environments, but have generated their richness and diversity.
Indigenous territories cover 22% of the world’s land surface, in areas that contain 80% of the planet’s biodiversity. Furthermore, the areas with the greatest presence and diversity of indigenous peoples are those with the world’s largest areas of tropical forest in the Americas, Africa and Asia, and 11% of the world’s forest lands are legally owned by indigenous peoples and communities.
IndiFest, in mutual support with indigenous organisations and producers, seeks to promote and disseminate indigenous peoples’ practices and knowledge that can help diagnose and reverse the consequences of climate change. This year offers content to enrich a collective imaginary of resilience, which should surely inspire and suggest alternative forms of living.
We offer a selection of films encompassing various themes: stories about the resistance of peoples, the defence of rights, the struggle of indigenous women, ancestral sexual diversities, the protection of water and territory, etc. A selection of films that grows year after year and in which, for the first time, the Indifest Awards differentiate between shorts and feature-length films.
The team at alterNativa Intercanvi amb Pobles Indígenes (alterNativa Mutual Exchange with Indigenous Peoples) and the Coordinadora Latinoamericana de Cine y Comunicación de los Pueblos Indígenas (Latin American Coordinator of Indigenous Peoples’ Film and Communication, CLACPI), the promoters of IndiFest, hope this year will leave its mark on you. Enjoy, participate in the joint reflection, awaken critical thinking and join us in reaffirming the social meaning of the festival.
