We are proud to celebrate Wapikoni’s 20th anniversary!
Wapikoni Mobile is an Indigenous non-profit organization. Through audiovisual creation, Wapikoni contributes to the personal, creative, and professional development of Indigenous Peoples and the affirmation of their communities. Its journey began in the summer of 2004, when its first mobile studio set off toward the Anicinape community of Pikogan to offer the first creative workshops. It was the beginning of a great adventure!
Since then, Wapikoni has visited 36 nations and 81 communities, 49 of them in Canada. It has traveled and collaborated with 32 international communities (Bolivia, Chile, Panama, Peru, Norway, Turkey, Jordan, the occupied Palestinian territories, etc.). This journey has resulted in over 1,400 short films and more than 900 musical creations! Many of these works have been recognized, as evidenced by the hundreds of awards and honors received by Wapikoni filmmakers over the years and their presence at prestigious festivals such as Clermont-Ferrand, Sundance, TIFF, and the Cannes Film Market. Today, Wapikoni’s mission remains the same: to support its members in their personal and professional development through audiovisual creation.
The program for this showcase presents some of Wapikoni’s most outstanding films, offering an overview of the themes explored over the past 20 years and highlighting the creativity of the filmmakers, as well as their perspectives on their own realities and cultures. Special emphasis was placed on the impact of these works on the filmmakers’ careers and the impressions they left on both Indigenous and non-Indigenous audiences. The stories and voices of Indigenous Peoples will continue to shine for many years to come.
